Sustained sufferings of the civilian population, increasing human rights violations, failure of the state to address lack of respect for the rule of law, weakening of independent public institutions and civil society, and short-sighted and non-transparent economic policies, undemocratic governance are issues that have prevented people from exercising and enjoying their rights and participating in decision making processes.

In the post-war period Sri Lanka is experiencing an internal crisis of governance and transparency deficits. Accountability mechanisms even when they exist do not hold perpetrators or violators to account

SDRO’s initiatives hope to analyze, discuss, and identify rights-based issues in the communities and seek solutions with the participation of the affected community through the programs it identifies under this component. It aims to raise the level of awareness of human rights and democracyamongst communities and harness their participation in such efforts which in turn will empower these communities which will be mobilized to take action. .

The thematic areas of the components are

  • Civil society empowerment
  • Enabling women, children & indigenous communities to claim their right
  • Networking & advocacy
